Comets subdued by Saddleback

SAN MARCOS, CA (1/29/2025) – Palomar College had its softball record evened at 1-1 Wednesday following a 4-2 nonconference loss to Saddleback.
 
The Comets were limited to seven hits, all singles, by two Saddleback pitchers.
 
The visitors scored a first-inning run on three hits off Palomar starting pitcher Maddie Bedolla, who was relieved by Nevaeh Haywood in the top of the third inning. The Bobcats added to their lead in the fifth inning when a leadoff double led to a run and a 2-0 advantage.
 
After being held scoreless on three hits through the first four innings, the Comets finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning then freshman shortstop Nalia Nuanez singled, sophomore third baseman Breanna Lutz walked and sophomore second baseman Josephine Heuberger also walked to load the bases with one out.
 
After Saddleback recorded the second out on a foul pop-up, freshman right fielder Samantha Garcia delivered a two-run single to right field to score sophomore pinch-runner Lauren Stehly and Lutz, tying the game at 2-2.
 
The Bobcats reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth when a two-out walk was followed by a double and a single which produced two runs off Haywood, who pitched five innings and took the loss to even her record at 1-1. Saddleback, playing its first game of the season, had at least one hit in every inning and finished with 13 hits.
 
Lutz reached base three times as she also provided two singles, but she was the only Palomar batter with more than one hit.
 
The Comets will be in action again on Feb. 5 when they take to the road for their first away game at San Bernardino Valley College starting at 3 p.m. Palomar's next home game is Feb. 6 against Mt. San Jacinto with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
