Gonzalez helps Comets to 30th win
SAN MARCOS, CA (4/12/2025) – Gisele Gonzalez singled and scored the go-ahead run in the second inning before adding long-distance insurance with a solo home run in the sixth inning as Palomar College won its 30th game of the softball season with a 5-1 victory Saturday over Mt. San Antonio College.
The nonconference win lifted the No. 2-ranked Comets to 30-3 on the season, while No. 15 Mt. SAC fell to 21-13 with its second loss of the year to Palomar.
Sophomore left-hander Maddie Bedolla pitched a complete game to earn her 17th win in 18 decisions. The Mounties took advantage of a leadoff single, an infield error and a run-scoring fielder's choice to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Bedolla then proceeded to shut out the visitors on four hits over the last six innings, finishing with one walk, one hit batter and four strikeouts.
Palomar tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first with three hits and a walk. Sophomore second baseman Josephine Hueberger singled to left field with one out and scored on a two-out single to left by freshman designated player Lauren Doepping.
Gonzalez led off the bottom of the second inning with an infield single to third base and advanced to second on a throwing error. The freshman center fielder took third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Nalia Nuanez and scored ahead of a double to right-center field by sophomore third baseman Breanna Lutz.
Hueberger followed with an infield single, and when her grounder was thrown away for another error, Lutz came in to score to give the hosts a 3-1 lead.
Nuanez singled to lead off the fourth inning but was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on another double by Lutz down the right-field line. After advancing to third on the throw to the plate, Lutz scored on a grounder to the right side by Heuberger which was misplayed into Mt. SAC's third error of the game.
Gonzalez led off the sixth by launching her second home run of the season over the left-field fence to cap the scoring.
In addition to Gonzalez, Lutz and Heuberger, freshman left fielder Taylor Armstrong also had two hits for the winners, who supported Bedolla with 10 hits at the plate.
The Comets face a busy final full week of the regular season with five games in five days, beginning with a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference contest April 15 at home against Imperial Valley at 1 p.m. Palomar will then play consecutive PCAC games April 16 at Grossmont and April 17 at home against San Diego City before hosting a non-conference doubleheader against College of the Canyons on April 19.
The regular season ends for the Comets with a home game against Grossmont on April 22.
