Another big first inning propels Comets past SDCC

SAN DIEGO, CA (3/5/2026) – Jumping out to a fast start by scoring eight first-inning runs for the second time in two games, Palomar College rolled to a 13-3 victory Thursday over San Diego City College in five innings.

The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference win left the Comets atop the PCAC softball standings with a 5-0 mark while improving their overall record to 14-1. Palomar has a two-game lead in the conference standings over Grossmont and San Diego Mesa following the Griffins' 4-3 win over Mesa on Thursday.

Palomar, ranked No. 3 in this week's California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association state poll, sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, beginning with a leadoff double to left field by sophomore first baseman Alexis Huey. The visitors added seven more hits in the opening frame, including three additional extra-base hits.

Freshman designated player Emma Schneider got the Comets on the scoreboard with a two-run triple to right field, freshman second baseman Kristina Deal added a run-scoring triple to center, and Huey capped the rally with another double to center which scored two runs.

Palomar added five more runs in the third inning, which began with a triple to center by freshman right fielder Kailey Dain. Sophomore left fielder Taylor Amstrong provided a run-scoring double through the right side, and sophomore shortstop Nalia Nuanez finished off the rally with her second hit of the game, an RBI single to right.

Huey, Schneider, Armstrong, Nuanez and sophomore center fielder Gisele Gonzalez all had two hits apiece as Palomar collected 15 hits at the plate.

Benefitting from the offensive support was sophomore pitcher Hailey White, who made her first start of the season and notched her first win with a five-inning complete game. The right-hander scattered nine hits while allowing two earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts as San Diego City fell to 0-4 in conference play and 3-14 overall.

The Comets return home Saturday for a nonconference doubleheader against Bakersfield, with game 1 scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Palomar has two PCAC road games next week, including at Grossmont on March 10 and at Southwestern on March 12, with both games slated for 3 p.m. starts.

In other scheduling news, Palomar's nonconference road game at No. 7 Fullerton which was rained out on Feb. 18 has been re-scheduled for April 8. The Comets and Hornets were originally scheduled to play each other at Palomar on April 8, but that game has been shifted to April 11.

Also, the Comets have added a nonconference home game against No. 13 Long Beach City on March 21.
