Huey continues power surge in grand fashion
EL CAJON, CA (3/10/2026) – Three days after hitting three home runs in a doubleheader, Alexis Huey showed no sign of a power outage.
The sophomore first baseman hit a grand-slam home run to highlight a seven-run third inning and drove in six runs as Palomar College remained unbeaten in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference softball standings with a 14-0 romp Tuesday at Grossmont College.
Sophomore left fielder Taylor Armstrong also homered for the Comets during the third-inning uprising as the No. 3-ranked team in the state improved to 6-0 in conference play and 17-1 overall with the five-inning run-rule victory. The loss dropped Grossmont three games behind the Comets in the PCAC standings with a 3-3 record, with the Griffins falling to 11-10 overall.
Grossmont came into the contest having won five of its previous six games, and the hosts loaded the bases with one out in the second inning after Palomar had taken a 2-0 lead in the top half of the inning on a two-run single by Huey. A comebacker to Comets pitcher Kiara Flaviani was converted into an inning-ending double play to end the threat by the home team.
The only other baserunner for the Griffins the rest of the way reached base on a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning as Flaviani retired 10 of the last 11 batters she faced to finish off the three-hit shutout. The sophomore right-hander walked one and struck out five while improving to 15-1 on the season.
A one-out single by freshman second baseman Kristina Deal in the top of the third inning preceded Armstrong's two-run home run to center field which extended the visitors' lead to 4-0. The homer was the first of the season for Armstrong, and Palomar followed a pitching change by the Griffins by loading the bases on a double by freshman third baseman Ava Alvarez, a single by sophomore catcher Dominique Garcia and a walk issued to sophomore shortstop Nalia Nuanez.
Huey then slammed an 0-2 pitch over the left-field fence for her team-leading 11th home run of the season and her sixth in seven games, increasing the Comets' lead to 8-0. Freshman right fielder Kailey Dain singled and stole second and third before scoring the final run of the inning on an infield single to the left side by sophomore designated player Lauren Doepping.
A leadoff pinch-hit single by freshman Penelope Morales ignited a five-run Palomar rally in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Emily Wright, who replaced Armstrong in left field, gave Palomar an 11-0 lead with a two-run single, and additional runs were scored ahead of an RBI single by freshman third baseman Natalie Arendt and RBI doubles by freshman catcher Delaney Smith and sophomore shortstop Aubrey Thorne.
The Comets finished with 17 hits, including two apiece by Huey, Dain, Deal, Garcia and Smith.
Palomar has another PCAC game at No. 19 Southwestern on March 12 at 3 p.m. The Comets return home March 14 for a nonconference contest against No. 12 Cerritos at 1 p.m.
