Comets blank Warriors for 12th straight win

TORRANCE, CA (3/25/2026) – One day after notching her 20th win of the season, Kiara Flaviani pitched six scoreless innings to add another victory to her state-leading total as the Palomar College softball team posted a 5-0 triumph at El Camino College on Wednesday.

In a nonconference matchup of two top-10 teams from the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association state poll, it was No. 2 Palomar prevailing over No. 8 El Camino for the Comets' 24th win in 25 games behind another strong showing in the circle by Flaviani.

Improving her record to 21-1, the sophomore right-hander blanked the Warriors on five hits across six innings, surviving mild threats in the first and sixth innings when the hosts ran into the third out at home plate on both occasions.

Flaviani retired the first two batters of the first inning before a single and a walk put runners at first and second. The lead baserunner attempted to score on a base hit to left field, but sophomore shortstop Nalia Nuanez connected on her throw to home plate where sophomore catcher Dominique Garcia applied the tag for the third out.

Flaviani allowed just two baserunners over the next four frames with a hit batter and a walk, but the first two El Camino batters in the sixth inning reached base on singles before Flaviani retired the next two with a strikeout and an infield popup.

A single to right field led to a throw from freshman right fielder Kailey Dain which was relayed home by sophomore first baseman Alexis Huey to Garcia as the Palomar defense cut down another potential run at the plate.

Freshman right-hander Gianna Burgin took over in the pitching circle for the bottom of the seventh inning, and the Warriors sandwiched a double and a single around a strikeout to put runners at the corners with one out. Burgin enticed the next two batters to fly out, securing Palomar's seventh shutout of the season.

The visitors opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Dain drew a one-out walk, advanced on a walk to sophomore Lauren Doepping and scored ahead of a two-out double to left by freshman third baseman Ava Alvarez.

The Comets added three runs in the fourth inning, which sophomore center fielder Gisele Gonzalez led off with a double to left-center field. Sophomore left fielder Taylor Armstrong and freshman second baseman Kristina Deal followed with run-scoring singles, and Deal was squeezed home by a sacrifice bunt by Nuanez for a 4-0 Palomar lead.

A leadoff double to left-center by Huey in the seventh led to a five-run advantage for the Comets. Huey advanced on a groundout before scoring on a sacrifice fly to right by freshman pinch-hitter Emma Schneider.

Gonzalez and Armstrong each had two of Palomar's nine hits as the Comets won their 12th straight game while extending El Camino's longest losing streak in 15 years to six games. The Warriors, who were ranked as high as No. 4 in the state earlier in the season, saw their record drop to 18-9.

The Comets have a week off from game action before returning to Pacific Coast Athletic Conference competition on March 31 for a 3 p.m. road contest at Grossmont. With a 10-0 record atop the PCAC standings, Palomar has a 3½-game lead over San Diego Mesa with five conference games remaining on the schedule.
Palomar's next home game is a nonconference matchup against Orange Coast on April 1 at 2 p.m.
