Flaviani fans 11 in 2-1 win over Jaguars
SAN MARCOS, CA (4/7/2026) – Kiara Flaviani struck out a season-high 11 batters and leadoff batter Alexis Huey scored both runs as Palomar College edged Southwestern College, 2-1, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference softball matchup on Tuesday.
Flaviani, a sophomore right-hander, earned her state-leading 26th win of the season as the Comets clinched at least a tie for the PCAC championship. The victory lifted Palomar to 12-0 in conference play, good for a three-game lead over San Diego Mesa with three conference games remaining.
Ranked No. 2 in the state, the Comets improved to 29-1 overall as Flaviani pitched a three-hitter, limiting the Jaguars to one run as Southwestern fell to 17-13 overall and 7-5 in conference play with its third loss in as many games against the Comets this season.
Huey gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead when the sophomore first baseman led off the bottom of the first inning with a towering home run that just cleared the left-field fence for her team-leading 16th round-tripper of the season.
Flaviani had four strikeouts through two innings after striking out the side in the top of the second, but the Jaguars combined a two-out walk with a double to tie the score at 1-1 in the third inning.
Huey singled with one out in the bottom of the third inning, advanced to third base on an infield single by freshman right fielder Kailey Dain and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on an infield groundout to the right side by freshman third baseman Ava Alvarez.
Flaviani retired 13 of the last 14 batters she faced after allowing the third-inning run. She finished with two walks, and the 11 strikeouts surpassed her previous season high of seven.
Huey and Dain each had two of Palomar's eight hits.
Tuesday's game began a busy week for the Comets, who are scheduled to travel to No. 8 Fullerton on April 8 and No. 12 Mt. San Antonio on April 10 for non-conference road games against ranked teams. Palomar is slated to host Fullerton on April 11 at noon, weather permitting.
The Comets trail only College of San Mateo in the current California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association state poll, but the defending state champion Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday in a 2-1 defeat to Hartnell. With a 32-0 record going into this week's play, San Mateo had been the only unbeaten team remaining in the state.
