Huey reaches record power level as Comets avenge only setback
WALNUT, CA (4/10/2026) – Facing the team which inflicted its only defeat of the softball season, Palomar College reversed its fortune Friday by run-ruling Mt. San Antonio College with a 9-1 rout in five innings on the Mounties' turf.
Leadoff batter Alexis Huey provided some history along the way for the state's No. 2-ranked team as the sophomore first baseman continued her torrid power display by breaking a 37-year-old record and establishing a new program standard with her 18th home run of the season. Her three-run blast came during a seven-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning for the Comets, who won their 19th straight game since coming up on the short end of a 3-2 loss at home in eight innings to Mt. SAC on Feb. 28.
Palomar hasn't lost since that first meeting with the Mounties, improving to 31-1 while dropping No. 12 Mt. SAC to 24-9 with its seventh loss in 10 games.
The visitors took a 2-1 lead into the fourth inning on the strength of Lauren Doepping's two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Huey led off the first with a walk, and two outs later Doepping connected on the 11th round-tripper of the season for the sophomore designated player.
A leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning allowed the Mounties to cut the deficit in half, but the Comets responded in the top of the fourth by sending 13 batters to plate while scoring seven runs on five hits. Doepping singled to lead off the inning and later walked to keep the rally going. In between, sophomore center fielder Gisele Gonzalez slugged a three-run home run for her second homer of the season, and sophomore catcher Dominique Garcia singled and sophomore shortstop Nalia Nuanez walked to set the stage for Huey.
The team leader in home runs responded with her third homer in three games and 18th of the season, breaking the previous school record of 17 home runs set in 1989 by former All-American Kenda Leffler and also tying Huey for the state lead with Cuesta's Addy Finegan.
A run-scoring single by sophomore left fielder Taylor Armstrong capped the Comets' fourth-inning rally and provided more than enough support for winning pitcher Kiara Flaviani, who improved her record to 27-1 by shutting out the Mounties on three hits after allowing the first-inning home run.
Mt. SAC loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning on a leadoff walk and a pair of two-out singles, but Flaviani retired the final batter on pop-up to Garcia at the plate to secure the win. Flaviani walked one, hit one batter and struck out three while maintaining her state lead in victories.
Palomar caps a busy week on April 11 with its fourth game in five days by hosting No. 8 Fullerton at noon. The Comets return to conference play April 14 with a road game at No. 10 San Diego Mesa at 3 p.m., followed by a home game against Imperial Valley on April 16 at 1 p.m. Palomar leads the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference by three games with a 12-0 record and can clinch the PCAC pennant outright with a win in any of its three remaining conference games.
