Comets rout Knights to complete unbeaten PCAC season

SAN DIEGO, CA (4/21/2026) – Palomar College wrapped up its fourth consecutive undefeated conference softball season Tuesday with a 12-0 victory in five innings at San Diego City College.

The Comets completed their Pacific Coast Athletic Conference campaign with a 15-0 record while winning their 56th straight conference game without a loss dating back to the 2022 season. Palomar, ranked No. 2 in the final California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association state poll of the regular season, will take a 37-1 overall record and a 25-game win streak into the 3C2A Southern California Regionals which begin May 1.

Palomar already had its 12th straight conference crown clinched before travelling to San Diego for its final game of the regular season. With the win over City, the Comets finished four games ahead of San Diego Mesa in the final standings.
With the loss, the Knights finished 3-12 in conference play and 11-25 overall.

Starting pitcher Kiara Flaviani capped off the regular season with three scoreless innings as the state leader in wins improved her record to 32-1. The sophomore right-hander blanked the Knights on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Flaviani dodged a leadoff double in the first inning and a pair of singles in the second inning before retiring the hosts in order in the third.

Freshman Gianna Burgin and sophomore Haley White each pitched a perfect inning to complete Palomar's ninth shutout of the season and the second in three games. Burgin struck out two of the three batters she faced, and White had one strikeout.

Five different players had two hits apiece as Palomar amassed 15 hits in its third win over San Diego City in as many games this season. The Comets broke a scoreless tie with five runs in the top of the third inning, which began with consecutive singles by sophomore catcher Dominique Garcia, sophomore shortstop Nalia Nuanez and sophomore first baseman Alexis Huey to load the bases.

Another single by freshman center fielder Kailey Dain scored Palomar's first run, and freshman third baseman Ava Alvarez followed with a two-run single. Dain and Alvarez combined for a double steal, with Dain pilfering the plate for the Comets' fourth run of the inning. Alvarez eventually scored on a groundout by sophomore left fielder Taylor Armstrong for a 5-0 Palomar lead.

Garcia led off the fourth inning with her second hit of the game, and Huey and Dain also singled with one out for their second hits of the contest, loading the bases again for Alvarez. The result was the same as the previous inning as Alvarez hit a two-run single for a 7-0 advantage. Dain scored on a single by sophomore designated player Lauren Doepping, and Alvarez and freshman pinch runner Jessica Covarrubias then worked a double steal, with Alvarez scoring on the play to boost the lead to 9-0.

Pinch-hit singles by freshmen Natalie Arendt and Emily Wright ignited a three-run rally for the visitors in the top of the fifth inning. A two-run double by freshman right fielder Emma Schneider capped the scoring.

Postseason play begins May 1 for the SoCal Regionals, with eight teams hosting best-of-3 series for the first round. As one of the top-seeded teams in the South, Palomar will host the first game of its Regional series on May 1 at 2 p.m. Game 2 will be played May 2 at noon, with a deciding game to follow if necessary.

The Super Regionals will be held May 8-9, also in the best-of-3 format. The top four teams from the South and the top four from Northern California will advance to the double-elimination state championship tournament being held May 14-17 at Bakersfield College.

Palomar finished only behind College of San Mateo in the final regular-season state poll. Ranked No. 1 in the South throughout the season, the Comets were ranked No. 2 in the state every week but one. Defending state champion San Mateo was ranked No. 1 every week throughout the season and is the only other one-loss team in the state with a record identical to Palomar at 37-1.
