Comets Shine at Mt. SAC Duals

WALNUT, CA (9/20/2025) -- Palomar Wrestling turned in a strong showing at the Mt. San Antonio College Duals, opening the day with a shutout, following with a hard-fought win, and closing with a tough quarterfinal matchup against the host Mounties. The Comets finished 2-1 on the day, highlighted by dominant bonus-point wins and clutch individual performances.

The opener set the tone as Palomar blanked Sierra College's White squad 55-0. The Comets dominated from start to finish, piling up five pins and two technical falls in the rout. Sergio Porras got things rolling at 141 with a 17-2 tech fall before Patrick Piec, Giancarlo Tolentino, Nick Garris, and Alejandro Scolari all recorded falls in the upper weights. Sebastian Anderson delivered a 16-0 tech fall at 174, and Marvin Morton gutted out a one-point decision to help secure the shutout.

The second dual brought more resistance as Palomar battled Sierra's Red squad in a back-and-forth contest. Lance Nguyen gave the Comets the opening edge with a gritty 7-6 decision at 125 before Nick Rodriguez shifted momentum with a dramatic pin late in the match at 149. Farzad Mohammadi kept the push alive with a narrow 10-9 victory, and Scolari sealed the deal with a forfeit win at heavyweight as Palomar closed out a 30-18 team victory. The balance between clutch lightweight wins and bonus points from the middleweights proved the difference in holding off Sierra's late rally.

The Comets' run ended in the quarterfinals against host Mt. SAC, who controlled the matchup on their home mats in a 45-6 win. Palomar's only points came at 133 and 141, where Hunter Haynes and Porras picked up wins by forfeit, but several Comets still battled hard despite the lopsided final score.

Individually, Palomar saw several standouts across the day. Porras finished undefeated and scored bonus points in both of his contested matches, while Scolari also went unbeaten with a fall and a forfeit win at heavyweight. Rodriguez and Piec provided momentum-swinging pins in the early duals, and Nguyen and Morton came through with razor-thin decisions that kept Palomar in control.

The Comets walked away from Mt. SAC with two dual victories, highlighted by a perfect shutout in the opener and a gritty team win against Sierra (Red). With balance across the lineup and multiple wrestlers stringing together clutch wins, Palomar showed it is well-prepared for the battles ahead this season.
