Comets Fall in Five-Set Thriller to Grossmont

SAN MARCOS, CA (10/8/2025) -- The Palomar College women's volleyball team came out strong but couldn't quite close the door, falling to Grossmont College in a five-set heartbreaker Wednesday night at The Dome. The Griffins rallied after dropping the first two sets to take the match 3–2 (18–25, 19–25, 25–19, 25–11, 15–7).

Hot Start, Cold Finish

The No. 20-ranked Comets looked dominant early, winning the first two sets behind aggressive swings and tight defensive coverage. But Grossmont responded with a surge midway through the third set and never looked back, stringing together long scoring runs to complete the comeback.

Competitive Energy Early

Palomar dictated the pace early, passing cleanly and keeping Grossmont off balance. The Comets' front line controlled the net, while the back row kept rallies alive with scrappy defense. However, Grossmont's offense found its rhythm late, hitting .343 as a team and outpacing Palomar in the final three frames.

Turning the Page

Despite the setback, the match showcased Palomar's intensity and depth against one of the top teams in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. The Comets fall to 11–5 overall and 4–3 in conference play but remain firmly in the mix near the top of the standings.

Palomar will look to bounce back when they host Cuyamaca College on Friday.
