Comets open conference play with road win at San Diego Mesa

SAN DIEGO, CA (2/26/2026) -- Palomar College Baseball opened conference play in strong fashion Thursday afternoon, defeating San Diego Mesa College 9-5 on the road.

After being held scoreless through five innings, the Comets broke through in the sixth with a four-run rally to seize control of the game. Palomar added four more runs in the eighth and tacked on an insurance run in the ninth to secure the conference-opening victory.

Braedon Peterson-Cheek led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks. Elijah Stephens and Michael Rodda each drove in two runs, while Ryan Ham launched a home run and finished with two RBIs. The Comets showed patience at the plate, drawing nine walks and consistently putting pressure on Mesa's pitching staff.

On the mound, Ryan Herrod earned the win, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing just one run while striking out five. Jordan Green worked 2.2 innings in relief, and Joey Halter closed the door with two strikeouts over the final two outs to seal the win. The pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts in the opener.

With the victory, Palomar starts conference play 1-0.

The two teams will resume the series on Saturday, as the Comets host the Olympians at Bob Vetter Field for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
